He paced his small apartment, the worn wooden floorboards creaking under his weight. A knot of anxiety had formed in his chest, making it difficult to breathe properly. He kept glancing at the clock; the hands seemed to be mocking his impatience. He was expecting Emily. He'd been expecting her for an hour, and an hour already felt like an eternity.

Every creak of the building made him jump. A cold sweat slicked his palms as he wrestled with the feeling that something was amiss. He felt a deep, instinctive unease that he couldn't put into words.

A knock echoed through the apartment. His heart leaped into his throat. He rushed to the door and pulled it open, only to be confronted by a woman, her face a mask of fury. “Where is he?” she demanded, her voice cutting through the air like shards of glass. “Where’s Daniel?”
